Drum rudiments

The six rudiments DRUMY can play with you, with the sticking written out. A board with one snare lane cannot show which hand plays a note, so where both hands are written, the right plays the snare and the left the high tom: the sticking is what you see.

Rudiments on the kit

The paradiddle groove puts a rudiment between the hi-hat and the snare, with the kick under it.

Rudiments: questions

Which rudiment should I learn first?

The single stroke roll: one hand, then the other, every eighth note. The first rudiment.

Why does DRUMY play rudiments on two drums?

Because a sticking is about which hand plays which note, and one snare lane cannot show that. With the right hand on the snare and the left on the high tom, each hand has a lane of its own, and a stroke on the wrong hand lands on the wrong drum.

What do R and L mean?

R is a stroke with the right hand and L with the left. Every rudiment here is written leading with the right; its page gives the left-hand lead as well.
